Quick Verdict
A small, unpretentious bar where the owners cook everything from scratch, the tortilla is legendary, and the value is impossible to beat.
You want honest, house-made food from owners who care, in a small bar that hasn't sold its soul to tourism.
About Ekaitz
Ekaitz is a neighbourhood gem in Gros where locals and travellers converge for unfussy, house-made food at prices that feel impossible in San Sebastián. The kitchen—run by Aitor and his wife—turns out spectacularly tender tripe with sofrito and picante, tortillas that reviewers call "the best I've ever had", and croquetas de bacalao so crispy and generous with fish they've become legendary. Raciones and pintxos anchor the menu: carrillera with potato purée, tacos camperos, and a rotating selection of spiced condiments that double as a masterclass in Basque heat. The bar is small and deliberately unpretentious—no chichis, no fuss—with a terrace just big enough to watch surfers cross the street to the beach. Service from the owners is warm and patient, even with broken Spanish; they'll recommend vermut and guide you through the menu with genuine care. Reviewers consistently praise the quality-to-price ratio and the sense that you've stumbled into a place that hasn't changed its soul to chase tourists.
What Stands Out
House-made pintxos and raciones
Multiple reviews highlight the tortilla de patatas as exceptional, carrillera with potato purée as 'de lujo', croquetas de bacalao as 'sublimes', and tripe as 'amazing in tenderness and flavor'—all prepared by the owners with fresh ingredients and traditional technique.
Warm, attentive ownership
Reviewers repeatedly name Aitor and his wife as the soul of the place, describing them as 'anfitriones de lujo', 'un crack', and 'very patient' even with language barriers; they actively recommend dishes and teach customers about local spiced condiments.
Unbeatable value
Across reviews, customers praise the 'calidad/precio excelente' and note that such quality and care at these prices is 'muy difícil hoy en día encontrar sitios así'—a rare find in a city known for high dining costs.
What Customers Say
Delicious food and incredibly kind service! The bar tender did not speak English but was very patient with my broken Spanish and he recommended some on the best vermut we have tried in Spain! The pinxos were fresh and delicious. Overall outstanding service, food and atmosphere
