About Altrincham

Altrincham started as a medieval market town, the kind of place where commerce happened on a single green and people knew each other's business. That market still exists—it's the spine of the town—but somewhere between the 1990s and now, something shifted. The independent traders who'd always been here got joined by people who actually wanted to cook properly, and suddenly a commuter suburb became a destination. It wasn't planned. It happened because rent was cheaper than the city centre and the market gave you access to decent ingredients.

The transformation accelerated around 2015 when Jadugar opened and proved that you didn't need to be in Manchester city centre to do serious cooking. That single venue changed the conversation. Other places followed: Dadar arrived with the same commitment to not cutting corners. RIGATONI'S Altrincham became the kind of Italian restaurant where they actually care about the pasta. The market stalls got better. The coffee shops stopped being functional and started being worth visiting.

Now there are 10 venues worth eating at within walking distance of the town centre—Italian, Indian, Brazilian, Korean. That's not luck. That's what happens when you get a critical mass of people who won't serve mediocre food, and a customer base that's learned to expect better. The market's still there. The green's still there. But the town's no longer a place you pass through on your way somewhere else.

The Changing Face

Altrincham's transformation is real but it's happened quietly, without the noise that follows gentrification elsewhere. Property values have risen—that's inevitable when a place becomes desirable—but the market remains mixed, the high streets still have independent traders alongside the restaurants, and it hasn't become a playground for one type of person. It's gentrified upwards in food quality and ambition, not outwards in displacement. The original character—the market, the local ownership, the sense that this is where Trafford people actually live—is still intact.

Altrincham FAQs

Dadar on Stamford New Road continues to hold the #1 spot for good reason. They do Indian food with consistency and flavour, drawing a crowd every night after 7 PM. Expect to pay around £25 per person for a proper meal there.

HARCOURT 夏𢡱 deserves your attention if you want actual food to go with your drink, and it's stayed in the top 5 for months now. Kennedy's Irish Bar does the classic pub thing well enough, with decent options and a packed room when the weekend hits (which means you'll queue).

You'll find a good mix. Indian is strong with Dadar and Gharrana - Indian Kitchen and Bar Altrincham. Italian places like Damo Altrincham and RIGATONI'S Altrincham are popular, and there's Brazilian at Jardim Rodizio Grill. Don't forget the Spanish tapas at Porta Tapas Bar either.

Yes, you can manage it. Porta Tapas Bar offers a relaxed setting for sharing plates, which can work well. If you prefer something a bit more traditional, Damo Altrincham provides a reliable Italian dinner without too much fuss.

Bramley Farm - Farmhouse Inns gives you a substantial meal for around £12-18, good if you’re hungry and not looking for anything fancy. For quick bites, you can usually find decent lunch deals around the market area for less than £10.

Porta Tapas Bar and Damo Altrincham both climbed two spots on the Hot List this month. Gharrana - Indian Kitchen and Bar Altrincham, Bar Etna, Toast, and even UNDERFOUND | Altrincham all nudged up one position. No new entries this round, just some reshuffling.
