About Alfama
We lean Porto, and we'll be honest: Lisbon wasn't the plan. But the velocity coming out of these streets — the openings, the queues, the volume of people eating out — was impossible to ignore, so we planted a flag. Alfama is where we started. It's the oldest part of the city, the tangle of lanes below the castle that largely shrugged off the 1755 earthquake while the rest of Lisbon fell. Fado was born in rooms like these.
What you get here is tascas on stepped alleys, grilled fish drifting out of doorways, and miradouro terraces locals gave up to the cruise crowd years ago. The food that earns its place sits a few turns off the tourist line, in rooms where the cooking still has to be good because the rent says so. The view-with-a-menu spots by the lookouts rarely make the list.
Read this opening list knowing what our data says about Alfama: it's one of the most visitor-heavy places we cover anywhere. Fewer than one in ten reviews here are written in Portuguese — among the lowest local share in our whole network, a tier it shares with Porto's Ribeira and the Algarve, against shares several times higher in our Spanish cities. So the list leans toward what visitors rate; we weight Portuguese-language reviews 1.5× to keep locals in the frame. This is month one, so nothing's climbing or falling yet. It's the starting line.

Alfama FAQs
This month, it's Marisqueira Azul at #1 on the Hot List. It's a solid choice for seafood, located conveniently near Praça do Comércio. You'll find fresh catches and a menu that’s a step up from the usual tourist fare.
For a proper craft beer, grab a seat at Outro Lado Craft Beer, which climbed to #2 this month. But if you're after something more traditional with actual locals instead of the usual crowd, Típica de Alfama at #4 or Madeira Pura - Poncha Alfama at #8 will give you what you need.
Alfama mainly offers traditional Portuguese cuisine, often found in its many tascas and restaurants like Velha Gaiteira or Santa Rita. You'll also find dedicated seafood spots, known as marisqueiras, like Marisqueira Azul. There are also gastropubs, such as LUDO'S, offering a modern twist on local dishes.
You can definitely find a good spot. Velha Gaiteira (#3) offers a cosy, traditional setting for a relaxed dinner. For something a bit more contemporary with a good atmosphere, LUDO'S (#9) is another excellent option for an evening out.
For good value, look for the smaller, less flashy tascas. O Tasco do Vigário (#17) or Velha Taberna (#26) often serve up solid, no-nonsense Portuguese dishes for around €10-€15 for a main course at lunch. You're getting honest food without the frills.
Everything, actually. The entire Hot List for Alfama is made up of new entries this month, a complete reset. Marisqueira Azul entered at #1, with Outro Lado Craft Beer and Velha Gaiteira right behind at #2 and #3 respectively. It's a fresh start for the chart.
